Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a bone disease that happens when bone mass and mineral density decrease which may result in a loss of bone density and an elevated risk of fractures (broken bones). It is referred to as a “silent” disease because it frequently goes unnoticed until a bone is broken. Osteoporosis is the main factor in fractures in older men and postmenopausal women. Osteoporosis-related breaks most commonly occur in the hip, wrist or spine.

There are usually no symptoms in the early stages of bone loss. When your bones are weakened by osteoporosis, you may experience the following signs and symptoms:

Back pain caused by a broken or collapsed vertebrae.

Height loss over time

A hunched posture

A bone that fractures far more easily than expected

Osteoporosis Risk Factors

White and Asian women over the age of 50

Low testosterone levels in men

Small thin women with petite body build

Heavy drinkers and smokers

Individuals who have had bariatric surgery

People who take oral corticosteroids on regular basis

Who Should Get Screened for Osteoporosis

Men aged 70 and up

Women over the age of 65

Anyone over the age of 65 who has had a fracture or has a risk factor

Women in menopause who are underweight have a prior fracture
