After many years in practice, I am still saddened whenever I see a child that has scoliosis. Saddened by the fact that if it was detected and managed early on, it may not have progressed to the point where the only option is surgery.
Unfortunately, most scoliosis goes undetected and when detected, the conventional treatment option is to take a wait and see approach.
Scoliosis is a 3-dimensional deformity of the spine that starts in early childhood and may progress until skeletal maturity is reached. A definition of scoliosis puts the cause down to one of unknown origins. However, since this definition was introduced there has been a lot of research and new findings that have opened the door to new treatment approaches.
As in most medical conditions, early detection is often key to getting the best results. The easiest way to detect scoliosis would be by checking our children. Have a look at the child from the back and observe their waist creases. Both sides should be the same. Then, have them bend forward and check if the upper back is straight or tilted. A difference in the waste angle or tilt in the upper back may indicate signs of scoliosis.
Any changes seen will require a follow up consultation with a medical professional to confirm the diagnosis. And the only way to confirm the presence or absence of scoliosis is through a series of scoliosis x-rays.
If the presence of scoliosis is detected, then the treatment option depends on various factors such as children’s age, the degree of the curve and the risk of progression.
At Kiropraktis Chiropractic Center, we offer 3 care of scoliosis treatment:
At Kiropraktis, we have treated many patients with scoliosis from as far afield as China, Maldives and Dubai. With early detection and intervention, scoliosis need not have a negative impact on one’s life. As the world’s fastest runner Hussain Bolt (he has scoliosis) has demonstrated, despite being diagnosed with scoliosis, he still managed to win the Olympic Gold medals.
